Youths Required to Play a Role in Nation Building

After a nine-year vacuum, the Indonesia Christian Higher Education Student Affairs Institution Communication Forum (Forkom LKPTKI) activity was held again. This activity, which was organized by Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW), was joined by representatives from 15 Christian higher education institutions from various regions in Indonesia.

The head of the committee, Dr. Wilson M.A. Therik, explained that this activity, which was held for four straight days, from Wednesday to Saturday (19-22 September) originated from the concern of UKSW student affairs organization activists towards the leadership crisis at the national level.

As for the communication forum at the PT Christian student affairs organization level in Indonesia, Dr. Wilson conveyed that it has been ongoing since 1993 with at first 9 Christian higher education institution members, and now it has reached 45 members as of 2009. Then it reached a vacuum until now.

“We have experienced an intellectual Christian youth cadre crisis at the national level. One of the ways to address this is by having a communication forum like this again. The task to protect Indonesia’s sovereignty is not only for university students, but it must also be the task of the Christian student affairs organizations in Indonesia,” clarified the Head of the Development Studies Master’s Degree Study Program.

The Forkom LKPTKI activity, which was officially opened by the UKSW Rector, Neil Semuel Rupidara, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D, in the UKSW campus Ds. Djojodihardjo Auditorium, Blotongan, had the theme “Strengthening the Christian Higher Education Institution Network in Indonesia”. This activity was part of a national discussion and seminar agenda.

In the seminar, there were three resource persons, including the Head of the Indonesia Church Association (PGI) Pdt. Dr. Albertus Patty, MA., M.ST.; a writer and activist in developing human resources, Semuel S. Lusi; and the UKSW Rector.

Strategic Agenda

Raising the topic “Mapping the Contributions of Church Youths & Christian Students in National Leadership”, Albertus Patty outlined an important national strategic agenda to prepare youths and university students to be able to play a role in nation building.

“Youths must be equipped with building in various life aspects that encourage participation, creativity, and leadership. Then they will be able to function as a moral strength which is positive, a social control which is critical for the government, and a transformative strength which fills various strategic positions in order to strengthen a democratic culture,” he said.

Similarly, Semuel S. Lusi gave his viewpoint towards the student movement which has a big contribution in Indonesia’s independence. As the nation’s continuing generation, Semuel stated that when Christian groups like churches, Christian higher education institutions, and Christian individuals are divided into job sectors, they need to take real positions and roles in society.

The purpose of this is to strengthen the Indonesian nation’s identity in countering dire struggles and challenges.

Meanwhile, the UKSW Rector explained that as a higher education institution, there needs to be new literacy to face the revolution 4.0 to produce competitive graduates. The curriculum also needs a new orientation, because with the presence of the revolution 4.0 era it is not enough to be faced with the old literacy (reading, writing, and mathematics) as a basic model for acting in society.

“As future leaders in the revolution 4.0 era, we need to understand new literacy, which is data literacy that involves the ability to analyze and use data (big data) in the digital world. Other things which need to be accelerated are technology literacy and human literacy,” explained Neil.

Fifteen Christian universities participated in this communication forum, including Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana Salatiga, Universitas Kristen Krida Wacana, Universitas Kristen Wira Wacana Sumba, Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja, Universitas Kristen Artha Wacana Kupang, Universitas Methodist Indonesia Medan, Universitas Kristen Indonesia Maluku, Universitas Kristen Maranatha Bandung, Universitas Kristen Petra Surabaya, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana Yogyakarta, Universitas Halmahera, Sekolah Tinggi Agama Kristen Negeri Palangkaraya, Universitas Kristen Palangkaraya, Sekolah Tinggi Agama Kristen Negeri Toraja, as well as Universitas Kristen Tentena.
