Yesi, a CSR-CMR volunteer and doctoral student in the Faculty of Theology at Satya Wacana Christian University, recently received a Dissertation Research Grant from the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Center for Religious Education Financing (Puspenma). CSR-CMR has partnered with Puspenma on research, scholarship (for graduate students in the Sociology of Religion at the Faculty of Theology), and financial assistance for students at higher educational institutions.

Every year, Puspenma gives research and writing grants for graduate students (both doctoral and magister) through a nationwide competition. The grant is for students who have completed their courses, defended their master’s/doctoral research proposals, and are connected to the Ministry of Religious Affairs (e.g., staff members at the Ministry of Religious Affairs or school teachers and/or lecturers at schools, colleges, or universities under the Ministry).

Yesi is writing a doctoral thesis on ex-religious terrorists who struggle to integrate into society in Central Java. Her study, based on in-depth interviews, observation of a limited number of participants, and document analysis, aims to map the process of social reintegration for ex-prisoners of religious terrorism (eks-napiter) in Central Java through existential phenomenology, focusing on the architecture of meaning, agents, and identity transformation. The focus of the research is directed at dismantling four things: how reintegration is interpreted in the dialectic of stigma management, reality construction, and reintegrative shaming; how eks-napiter build redemptive meaning and live it through the lived body; as well as how the trajectory is formulated into an architectural model of the meaning and foundation of the Sociology of survivors in the context of the sociology of religion in Indonesia.
